Vacation Tips
Parris Island is the main training center for the US Marine Corps and is also the working grounds for thousands of men and women in the Marines and the Navy. Parris Island remains the nation's most famous military training facility.
The Parris Island Museum (843-228-2951) is open to the public daily 10am to 4:30pm seven days a week. It revives the military training of recruits from the very beginning in 1889.
The Parris Island Museum offers exhibits of military artifacts, interesting documents, uniforms, photographs, statues, and weapons of Marines and every war since the Civil War. There is also memorabilia of women within the Marine Corps and there are videos of numerous celebrities, famous athletes, and major figure in society. And of course, the museum has a nifty gift shop.
Take Hwy 278 from Hilton Head towards Bluffton then take Hwy 170 North towards Beaufort. You will cross the Broad River Bridge where you will turn right onto Hwy 802 (Savannah Hwy) and follow the signs to Parris Island. Be sure to have your driver's license, proof of insurance, and auto registration in order to get through the security gate.
