The women of Yemassee, a tiny town a half hour from Hilton Head, took a mass exodus to an undisclosed location (somewhere in Jacksonville, Florida) Sunday, as camera crews take over the town for a seven-day social experiment and reality television show that will premier on the Lifetime network.

“The Week the Women Went” will chronicle how the men they leave behind take care of business while completing a community project along the way. So far the show has had modest ratings in the UK and Canada, but this will be the premier season for the United States version of the show.

After a press conference at 4 p.m. at Ray’s Rib King on Castle Hall Road, the women said goodbye to their families and walked to the train depot to catch an 8 p.m. Amtrak. It is rumored that some of the women were transported by bus. BBC Worldwide Productions vice president Christine Shaw wouldn’t say Thursday how many women will participate, but its rumored to be about 125.

A media alert for Sunday’s event describes the show as a “daring social experiment,” in which the lives of Yemassee’s men either turn “into chaos or something magical happens.” As a person who lives in that town, I’ve spoke with some of the participants (I know many of them) who claim the show is less realty and more acting. There is allegedly more “retakes” and situation manipulation than anyone could have ever guessed including a staged wedding proposal. The show should be fun to watch for me at least since most families being filmed are either my wife’s family or friends.

One good thing, is the production is responsible in assisting town in rebuilding a run down train station that is shaping out to look unbelievable. I’ve heard that some local residences and companies have also donated to rebuilding.

The women are expected back this weekend.

If you live nearby, taking a one-night vacation on Hilton Head may be feasible. We live only about an hour away, and just wanted to get away, hit the beach, do some shopping and take a few family members with us.

This time, we checked for some deals on Expedia, and to my surprise, we found a one-night deal for a 3 bedroom villa. The price was really good leading to my cynicism to kick in.

We booked the villa belonging to Spinacker Resorts and located in Waterside, which is just off Pope Ave. The villa was very nice and a great value for the price. A bunch a shopping is very close by including Coligny Plaza, the most popular beach shopping plaza on Hilton Head. Amenities include numerous shops, restaurants, the beach, tennis courts, and golf. You can catch a free shuttle, walk or drive to the beach area. Everything is extremely close since there is a direct road from Waterside leading to the parking lot or Coligny Plaza.

Before checking in, we hit the new Tanger Outlets One. Very nice, but still not as good as Tanger Outlets Two.

The villa was roomy, with a wide living room area combined with a dining area plus a kitchen. The three rooms were spacious. Two rooms had king size beds and the third had two twins. TV’s were a little old, but free wi-fi was available. Once we settled in, we went to the beach. You can choose Forest Beach, Coligny Beach, Burkes Beach, Driessen Beach and Folly Field Beach.

After our beach visit we called in an order to Fuddruckers. While my son and I picked up the food, everyone else bathed. We ended up eating together at the villa.

We had a very enjoyable time for a one night stay and this area is highly recommended by us if you’re looking for great value. It was not the most luxurious area, but that isn’t what we were going for this time. It was very family friendly for a great price.

Also, while watching Thor, we noticed the sound had been turned up some, which made the movie more…well…movie-like. We wish a sincere good luck to the new owners and look forward to a better movie experience. We loved you Sea Turtle Cinemas. Rest In Peace.

Turns out the trickiest part about Halloween this year is not what to wear, but when to wear it.

With Oct. 31 falling on a Sunday, parents are wondering when to take their children door to door for treats.

Laurie Conley of Rose Hill Plantation in Bluffton is among them. She’s still not sure when she’ll take her three children — ages 4, 5 and 7 — out.

The Rose Hill Property Owners’ Association has not issued a statement on when trick or treaters should hit the streets.

Sunday night would not be good for the Conley kids. Unlike students in Beaufort County public schools, who are off next week, Conley’s children go to private school and must be back in class Monday.

“I don’t want to have to worry about getting them to bed, then up in the morning,” Conley said.

The Halloween-on-Sunday dilemma has sparked debate in municipalities around the country.

Some have picked a day for trick or treating.

Others, including Beaufort County, have not, according to spokeswoman Suzanne Larson.

“Council is sort of out of the Halloween business,” she said.

In nearby Chatham County, Ga., area mayors have set trick or treating for Saturday night. Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis said some parents were concerned about celebrating the holiday on a Sunday, a day typically reserved for worship.

Some community associations have taken matters into their own hands.

The Board of Directors at Bluffton Park, for example, sent letters to residents that trick-or-treaters should go out on Saturday night.

But at Hilton Head Plantation, the holiday will take place on Sunday, as nature and the calendar intended, according to general manager Peter Kristian.

“We think Halloween should be on Halloween,” he said.

Law enforcement agencies will hedge their bets by staying alert both nights.

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said extra officers will be on traffic patrol and on foot around the county over the weekend, especially in neighborhoods where lots of costumed children are making rounds.

“I think that’s the safest thing to do,” he said.

If there is one bright spot in this dilemma, it is this: Halloween doesn’t fall on Sunday again until 2021

The 6th annual Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival will be held, October 17 – 24, 2010, in the charming and eclectic historic district of Bluffton, well known for its quirky art community and natural river beauty. The festival is an eight-day event offering a myriad of activities, showcasing the locally harvested seafood, delicious Low Country cuisine, rich history, great art and Southern hospitality found only in Bluffton. There is truly something for everyone!

History and Mission

The Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival was created in 2005 to help further a sense of community and to benefit the citizens, the local area merchants and artists through tourism. The citizens of the Town of Bluffton had and continue to express the need to protect and maintain the pristine quality of the May River and the historic Bluffton Oyster Company, as they are both instrumental to the very essence of the community. “As Bluffton continues to grow, it is paramount that we continue to introduce our citizens, old and new, to these precious Bluffton gems. Festivals are like magnets, they attract the young and old, rich and poor, locals and transplants, all to celebrate their community,” said Dan Wood, Festival Founder.

What began as a one day event in 2005 and expanded to a weekend celebration in 2006 has, since 2007, been a week long celebration highlighting the “gems of Bluffton”: the natural beauty of this river community; its rich history; the pristine quality of the May River; the bounty of the local waterways; and the cultural and artistic aspect of the community itself. It is touted as and truly is the celebration “where fine art and the bounty of the sea come together”!

It is our purpose with each festival to help raise awareness that fosters protection of the May River and the rich culture and history of our area for the enjoyment of generations to come.

After falling to its lowest level in a year in June, the number of Beaufort County homes in some stage of foreclosure more than doubled to 418 in July, according to RealtyTrac, a California firm that compiles such data.

The number of homes in default or foreclosure has increased from a handful in some months of 2005 to an average of more than 300 a month in 2010.

July’s total means one in every 199 homes in Beaufort County is in foreclosure, according to RealtyTrac. That’s the second highest rate in the state.

Dorchester County ranked first with one in every 193 homes in foreclosure.

Charles Sampson, president of the Hilton Head Area Association of Realtors, said an increasing number of foreclosed properties seems to appear each month in the Multiple Listing Service of Hilton Head Island.

Although the number and dollar volume of sales are increasing compared to last year at his firm, Charter I Realty & Marketing, he fears the county’s tide of foreclosures for sale could continue as banks market foreclosed properties they haven’t previously listed.

Todd McDaniel, president of the Beaufort County Association of Realtors, said there are about 170 distressed properties listed in the Beaufort Multiple Listing Service, about double the number from a year and a half ago but not significantly higher than have been listed more recently.

“We may be at a point where it’s starting to level off,” he said.

Jasper County remains relatively untouched by foreclosure, RealtyTrac’s data show. Six homes — one in every 1,534 — were in some stage of foreclosure in July. That’s up slightly from June’s total of five.

Jasper County’s highest monthly total since January 2007 was 15 in February of this year.
