HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – The sixth annual Hilton Head Island Seafood Fest, sponsored by the David M. Carmines Memorial Foundation, is set to take place Friday, April 5, 2013, 5-8pm, and Saturday, April 6, 11am-5pm, at Shelter Cove Community Park.

The popular, family-friendly event serves as the foundation’s annual fundraiser with proceeds – from admissions, beverage sales, restaurant purveyor fees, artists’ fees and auction funds – benefiting the American Cancer Society, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center and the Island Recreation Scholarship Fund.

The Friday night component of this year’s Seafood Fest, now a two-day event, will be a more intimate gathering than the main event on Saturday and will feature live entertainment from Cranford & Sons—Hilton Head Island’s Rockabilly-Folk Explosion/Low Country Stomp band—as well as delicious food from Alexander’s, Black Marlin’s, Cool Breeze, Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, Island Kettle Corn, Joe Loves Lobster Rolls LLC, The Old Oyster Factory, Red Fish, Skull Creek Boathouse and Street Meet.

Seafood Fest will continue on Saturday and feature more than a dozen area restaurants dishing up local and regional seafood specialties, and other tasty dishes, as well as an “Iron Chef”-style competition, local artists showcasing their talents, live entertainment by The Headliners and a silent auction with incredible items.

Participating restaurants include: Alexander’s, American Culinary Federation, Black Marlin Bayside Grill, Bluffton Oyster Co., The Chart House, Cool Breeze, The Crazy Crab, Gillan’s Fresh Seafood & Oyster Bar, Hana Sushi & Japanese Fusion, Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, Island Kettle Corn, Joe Loves Lobster Rolls LLC, The Old Oyster Factory, Red Fish, Skull Creek Boathouse, Steamers Seafood and Street Meet, among others.

The Better Show, a daily, national television show, will be filming a segment called “License to Spill”. The segment will feature Hilton Head Island, the Seafood Fest, and some of the local food and chefs participating in the event.

Up to six local chefs will compete in the “Iron Chef” event, modeled after the TV show of the same name. Competing chefs will be presented with identical “mystery baskets” containing a variety of ingredients, including two local seafood items, and each chef will be allotted one hour to create an appetizer and an entrée.

Finished plates will be judged on creativity, composition, taste and presentation, and winners will be awarded prizes and trophies. Ron Andrews, President of the Low Country Chapter of the American Culinary Federation, is assisting with competition logistics and organization. Andrews has competed in numerous culinary competitions and will also serve as one of the event’s judges.

The Headliners, a long-time favorite musical group among locals and visitors, will perform big band, classic 50s and 60s rock-‘n’-roll, beach music, Motown, disco hits from the 70s and hits from the 90s.

Additional activities will include a “Kids Zone” with inflatable bounce houses and games, Famous Crab Races, a Bocce Ball Tournament by the Italian American Club of Hilton Head (please contact info@iachh.org to participate) and a silent auction.

Sponsors say the silent auction, which has become one of the event’s most popular components, will be “even bigger and better” this year. Last year, winning bidders enjoyed a variety of exciting items, such as a chef-prepared four-course meal, a wine tour in Sonoma County, a guided turkey hunt on one of the region’s premier private hunting properties and a deep-sea fishing expedition.

Admission is $5 for adults and FREE for kids younger than 12. Food and refreshments available for purchase with tickets.

For additional information please visit davidmcarmines.org, or call 843.681.7273.

Bring your little pirate aboard the Black Dagger and set sail on the pirate cruise of their dreams! From beginning to end the action is non-stop as we transform your kids into our Pirate Crew. The adventure starts at the dock where each little mate gets to put on some pirate gear and learns to talk like a pirate. Once they’ve sworn their allegiance to the boat they are officially part of the Crew and get to join us in the hunt for loot.

We’ve got a map that leads to a sunken treasure chest, but Stinky Pete knows about it too and he stole the key. The race is on to find Stinky Pete, and get the key back before he can steal the treasure for himself. Once we find him our new Crew is going to have to man the water cannons, and blast the stink right off of Pete until he gives us the key!

Fortunately, at Pirates of Hilton Head, we always beat Stinky Pete and every little pirate always gets a handful of the loot. We celebrate the victory with some music and dancing before heading back to port. All told it’s about an hour and a half of fun including the time on the dock. Please show up at least 20 minutes early to get your pirate name and a tattoo!

We look forward to having you aboard. This is one adventure your child will never forget! Learn more at Pirates of Hilton Head.

Flying over and thru the trees for about 2 hours of zipping thrills, overlooking the water, marshes and boats, learning about local ecology and laughing with your zipline group and guides…welcome to ZipLine hilton head, the Island’s new destination at Broad Creek Marina Land and Water Adventures, opening April 17. The 2011 South Carolina Visitors’ Guide noted that today’s modern family should “start with the zip…to tear tweeting, texting teens away from their electronics and into family fun.”

ZipLine hilton head features 8 ziplines including a dual cable 900 ft. racing zipline finale; 3 suspended sky bridges; and an aerial spiral staircase, all connected to 8 tree platforms and 4 towers, with heights to 75 ft. It is the only Zipline tour within a 250 mile radius of HHI and is located on Broad Creek Marina’s 15-acre waterfront site.

Broad Creek Marina Adventures already features kayaking, parasailing, dolphin nature tours and the popular Up the Creek Pub & Grill, chosen by “Southern Living Weekends” as 1 of 4 Island restaurants to visit. Additional outdoor eco-activities planned for summer 2012 include a ropes course, a bungee trampoline, a rock climbing wall and a Lil’ Zipper for youngsters.

ZipLine Hilton Head reflects the boom in both eco-tourism and ziplining around the world. Two guides lead groups up to 8; ages 10 and older; weight requirements from 80 lbs. to 250 lbs. Zipline tours run 365 days a year; initial price is $89 per person; discounts for active military; gift certificates available.

The women of Yemassee, a tiny town a half hour from Hilton Head, took a mass exodus to an undisclosed location (somewhere in Jacksonville, Florida) Sunday, as camera crews take over the town for a seven-day social experiment and reality television show that will premier on the Lifetime network.

“The Week the Women Went” will chronicle how the men they leave behind take care of business while completing a community project along the way. So far the show has had modest ratings in the UK and Canada, but this will be the premier season for the United States version of the show.

After a press conference at 4 p.m. at Ray’s Rib King on Castle Hall Road, the women said goodbye to their families and walked to the train depot to catch an 8 p.m. Amtrak. It is rumored that some of the women were transported by bus. BBC Worldwide Productions vice president Christine Shaw wouldn’t say Thursday how many women will participate, but its rumored to be about 125.

A media alert for Sunday’s event describes the show as a “daring social experiment,” in which the lives of Yemassee’s men either turn “into chaos or something magical happens.” As a person who lives in that town, I’ve spoke with some of the participants (I know many of them) who claim the show is less realty and more acting. There is allegedly more “retakes” and situation manipulation than anyone could have ever guessed including a staged wedding proposal. The show should be fun to watch for me at least since most families being filmed are either my wife’s family or friends.

One good thing, is the production is responsible in assisting town in rebuilding a run down train station that is shaping out to look unbelievable. I’ve heard that some local residences and companies have also donated to rebuilding.

The women are expected back this weekend.

If you live nearby, taking a one-night vacation on Hilton Head may be feasible. We live only about an hour away, and just wanted to get away, hit the beach, do some shopping and take a few family members with us.

This time, we checked for some deals on Expedia, and to my surprise, we found a one-night deal for a 3 bedroom villa. The price was really good leading to my cynicism to kick in.

We booked the villa belonging to Spinacker Resorts and located in Waterside, which is just off Pope Ave. The villa was very nice and a great value for the price. A bunch of shopping is very nearby including Coligny Plaza, the most popular beach shopping plaza on Hilton Head. Amenities include numerous shops, restaurants, the beach, tennis courts, and golf. You can catch a free shuttle, walk or drive to the beach area. Everything is extremely close since there is a direct road from Waterside leading to the parking lot or Coligny Plaza.

Before checking in, we hit the new Tanger Outlets One. Very nice, but still not as good as Tanger Outlets Two.

The villa was roomy, with a wide living room area combined with a dining area plus a kitchen. The three rooms were spacious. Two rooms had king size beds and the third had two twins. TV’s were a little old, but free wi-fi was available. Once we settled in, we went to the beach. You can choose Forest Beach, Coligny Beach, Burkes Beach, Driessen Beach and Folly Field Beach.

After our beach visit we called in an order to Fuddruckers. While my son and I picked up the food, everyone else bathed. We ended up eating together at the villa.

We had a very enjoyable time for a one night stay and this area is highly recommended by us if you’re looking for great value. It was not the most luxurious area, but that isn’t what we were going for this time. It was very family friendly for a great price.

Also, while watching Thor, we noticed the sound had been turned up some, which made the movie more…well…movie-like. We wish a sincere good luck to the new owners and look forward to a better movie experience. We loved you Sea Turtle Cinemas. Rest In Peace.

Turns out the trickiest part about Halloween this year is not what to wear, but when to wear it.

With Oct. 31 falling on a Sunday, parents are wondering when to take their children door to door for treats.

Laurie Conley of Rose Hill Plantation in Bluffton is among them. She’s still not sure when she’ll take her three children — ages 4, 5 and 7 — out.

The Rose Hill Property Owners’ Association has not issued a statement on when trick or treaters should hit the streets.

Sunday night would not be good for the Conley kids. Unlike students in Beaufort County public schools, who are off next week, Conley’s children go to private school and must be back in class Monday.

“I don’t want to have to worry about getting them to bed, then up in the morning,” Conley said.

The Halloween-on-Sunday dilemma has sparked debate in municipalities around the country.

Some have picked a day for trick or treating.

Others, including Beaufort County, have not, according to spokeswoman Suzanne Larson.

“Council is sort of out of the Halloween business,” she said.

In nearby Chatham County, Ga., area mayors have set trick or treating for Saturday night. Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis said some parents were concerned about celebrating the holiday on a Sunday, a day typically reserved for worship.

Some community associations have taken matters into their own hands.

The Board of Directors at Bluffton Park, for example, sent letters to residents that trick-or-treaters should go out on Saturday night.

But at Hilton Head Plantation, the holiday will take place on Sunday, as nature and the calendar intended, according to general manager Peter Kristian.

“We think Halloween should be on Halloween,” he said.

Law enforcement agencies will hedge their bets by staying alert both nights.

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said extra officers will be on traffic patrol and on foot around the county over the weekend, especially in neighborhoods where lots of costumed children are making rounds.

“I think that’s the safest thing to do,” he said.

If there is one bright spot in this dilemma, it is this: Halloween doesn’t fall on Sunday again until 2021
